Stabilizing severely damaged newspaper pages

Promoted in the KUR programme to the preservation and restoration of mobile cultural asset by:

Kulturstiftung des Bundes and Kulturstiftung der Länder in cooperation with Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Polymerforschung, Potsdam-Golm

The stabilization of severely damaged newspaper pages is a joint project of the Berlin State Library and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Polymerforschung (IAP), Potsdam-Golm in the frame of the KUR – program for the conservation and restoration of mobile cultural heritage with the support of the Kulturstiftungen des Bundes und der Länder.

The aim is to develop and test a technology, a cost-efficient procedure to stabilize the severely damaged large-format newspaper pages to make digitization and preservation of the original pages possible.

The number of the newspapers pages in need of this procedure is vast: Our first estimate of the holdings of the Berlin State library´s newspaper collection showed about 25.000 volumes with ca. 10 million pages in need of stabilization if they are to be made accessible again.
