With 21,000 inhabitants (17% of inhabitants) it is the most populous district of the city. Its inhabitants are called Planoisiens and Planoisiennes. The area is constantly changing (reconstruction and renovation of the old buildings, construction of a new hospital, planning of the future tram). Despite the difficult economic and social conditions, Planoise has become a commercial crossroads (with its malls and many companies) a multicultural place (the area numbers over 50 cultural origins) in a highly urbanized area (8.700 inhabitants/km²). Few monuments or sites of interest exist, but buildings like the Departmental archives of Doubs or the statue of diversity are notable.
