Stare hrvatske novine
Nacionalna i sveučilišna knjižnica u Zagrebu - Zagreb

Abstract: Croatian Historic Newspapers is the central portal that provides access to digitised Croatian newspapers from the collections of National and University Library in Zagreb and other heritage institutions in Croatia. The aim of the portal is to enable access to historic newspapers for a wide range of users. The Portal currently contains a selection of titles from 18th and 19th centuries, featuring the significant titles like: Kroatischer Korrespondent (1789), Il Regio Dalmata = Kraglski Dalmatin(1806-1810), Novine horvatzke (1835) with its supplement: Danicza horvatzka, slavonzka y dalmatinzka (1835-1848), Dom i sviet (1888-1919) and Primorac (1873-1878). Full texts of digitised newspaper issues can be searched through the portal interface. In addition, the user can browse titles of the 19th century Croatian newspapers and view metadata of individual titles. The portal was developed from the project entitled Croatian Historic Newspapers, financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and realised in the National and University Library in Zagreb during 2008 and 2009 within the national project Croatian Cultural Heritage. The basic motive was to ensure broad access to Croatian historic newspapers that contain a wealth of information and data on national and local history, but the print originals on brittle and acid paper have to be specially protected and their use is restricted. Systematic digitisation ensures preservation of valuable originals and extensive usage of digitised copies. The project aim is to develop a system for cooperative input of digital images, metadata and holdings information pertaining to newspaper titles in the National and University Library in Zagreb and other heritage institutions. Development of common standards and digitisation procedures and uniform metadata input will, in the long run, make possible rationalisations and savings in national digitisation projects. The Portal will also include: links to digitised newspapers online available elsewhere, data on l (image/jpeg)
